Why positive affirmations actually work

In the realm of self-improvement, affirmations are often hailed as powerful tools for reshaping our perspectives. But how can these simple statements actually alter our minds?

At the core of their effectiveness lies the concept of neuroplasticity — the brain's remarkable capacity to rewire itself in response to experiences, thoughts, and behaviors. This principle highlights the wonderful reality that our brain circuitry is highly malleable and that at any time we can create new neural pathways for positive change.

Affirmations help us create these new neural pathways by harnessing the power of simple repetition. By regularly reciting positive affirmations, we actively reinforce positive beliefs and thoughts within our minds. Each repetition acts as a gentle nudge, nudging our neural pathways towards more empowering narratives.

Not only do positive affirmations create new neural pathways but they help us replace entrenched negative thought patterns with more constructive alternatives. By consciously choosing to affirm our worth, capabilities, and potential, we sow the seeds of positivity within the fertile soil of our consciousness.

In essence, affirmations are not just words; they are tools that can literally re-shape our thought patterns and neural pathways.

Here are some affirmations gifted to me by a dear colleague, Anne Sturgess. Anne is a child advocate, educator and personal growth coach who has spent over 20 years dedicated to helping parents and children to thrive.

“I choose to love and care for myself.”

“I am enough. I am not here to live the life others choose for me.”

“I give myself permission to relax and recharge.”

“I am not defined by the labels that others assign to me.”

“I live life according to my truth and values.”

“I am learning to release control and trust myself and others more.”

“Where I am in my journey is where I’m meant to be.”

“My brain is creating, even when I’m resting.”

“I am doing the best I can in the current circumstances.”

You might like to stick an affirmation that resonates with you on the bathroom mirror, on the car dashboard or perhaps set a reminder on your phone to say an affirmation. There might be specific times of the day when affirmations are more impactful than others. You might like to associate your affirmation with a particular task to help engrain the habit, for example brushing your teeth or getting in the shower.

Try saying an affirmation daily for one week and notice if this has a positive impact for you and your growth journey.
